Ukrainian Christmas Eve
A twelve course meatless meal and midnight mass will be the focus tonight for many Orthodox Christians celebrating Christmas by the Julian calendar. Christmas Eve is steeped in tradition for many Ukrainian, Russian and other Orthodox cultures. The 12 course meatless meal representing the 12 apostles will begin following the sight of the first star of the evening; plate settings will be set in memory of deceased family members; prayer and the singing of traditional Christmas Carols will round out the evening as many Orthodox Christians attend a special midnight mass.
